Journeys End by Robert Cedric Sherriff - Letter From Stanhope to Raleighs Parents
Journeys End by Robert Cedric Sherriff - Letter From Stanhope to Raleighs Parents Journeys End Letter24th March 1917Somewhere inFranceDear Mr and Mrs RaleighI'm deeply sorry to inform you that your son has been killed in action. Jimmy was killed on the 21st of this month. Jimmy had just been put on duty on the front line the Germans had been making a big push for a few hours by the time Jimmy had took his duty. There guns shelled us relentlessly. A shell dropped just in front of our line and exploded sending shrapnel flying all over. A piece of shrapnel unfortunately hit jimmy in the back, he was quickly picked up by two soldiers and me. We carried him down into the dugout; he was in no pain at all. Jimmy asked for some water I gave him a mug full, then we lay there for several minutes reminiscing over the good times I and he had had.Jimmy Dean and Large DogsHe then asked for a candle, he has always been afraid of the dark. By the time I appeared back at his side he was gone he had peacefully slipped away.Raleigh had only been with the company a small time but he had already made many friends. He used to sit with the men in the front doing work when he needn't to. A lot of the men admired him and my generals often complementing him on his intelligence and enthusiastic attitude. Raleigh participated in a successful raid on the German line where he led ten men he successfully captured a machine gun and bundled a German across no mans land, for his brave efforts that helped the English war campaign he received a Military Cross. I feel deeply saddened by Jimmy's death he will be greatly missed by me and my men. Jimmy was a superb...

The Challenger Accident Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
The Challenger Accident - Essay Example he Challenger mishap was caused by the failure ââ¬Å"was the destruction of the seals that are intended to prevent hot gases from leaking through the joint during the propellant burn of the rocket motor.â⬠(Presidential Commission on the Space Shuttle Challenger Accident, 1986). The damaged O-ring seals in the tang and clevis joint were found to cause the failure of the seals. The commissionââ¬â¢s investigations pointed out several contributing mechanical and structural breaches that lead to the failure. Among the major structural flaws was a defect in the fittings of the aft jointââ¬â¢s tang and clevis. Original design of the aft segments or other segments of the Solid Rocket Booster has a tang that almost perfectly fits into the clevis of the other segment. This structural design is oftentimes contaminated during handling and transport such that the roundness of the segments is altered due to pressures and transport vibrations. Minor alterations in the roundness of the segments would result to differences in the diameters of the tang and the clevis. These problems may result to some fitting imperfections that could make the O-rings attached within the joint more vulnerable to damage. Another contributory factor to the failure of the seals was the conditions of the O-rings during launch. It was noted that during launch time, the temperature was very cold and the launch facility even experienced problems due to lower temperature. Furthermore the SRB used in the Challenger launch have been used in several other missions. This practice had been used in the space program without any problems. For better seal performance, tests confirmed that actuating pressure must get behind the entire face of the O-ring on the upstream side of the groove within which the O-ring sits (Presidential Commission on the Space Shuttle Challenger Accident, 1986, p. 61). Under imperfect sealing conditions discussed above a potential greater pressure is exerted on the O-ring and would make it fit

Elimination of the Quality Issues and the Retention of Business Case Study - 5
Elimination of the Quality Issues and the Retention of Business - Case Study Example Quality is an aspect which has gained importance and recognition around the world. The three components of quality which are quality control, quality assurance and quality improvement on a constant basis have become the core functions of numerous organizations since consumers are now well informed and not ready to compromise on quality. As the case suggests, the quality standards set by Presto Cleaners clearly did not meet the consumersââ¬â¢ standards and resulted in a lot of problems for the consumers (Dale B, van der Wiele T, van Iwaarden J, 2007). à Quality standards, in this case, did not revolve around the quality of the product itself but the means used to communicate and transfer the service to the consumer. Quality management must then be implemented whereby quality assurance is guaranteed both with the products and the processes used to deliver the service altogether. Without the implementation of appropriate quality standards, preferably those that are in line with the principles and guidelines set by the ISO standards of quality, an organization will not be able to effectively conduct business and might even fail to retain let alone attract new business. This was exactly what happened in the case of Presto Cleaners; Mr. Shelton was not satisfied with the services Presto Cleaners had provided and demanded compensation for the loss incurred by him or else lose out on business.à The objectives for which one chooses a product or service maintain a direct link with quality i.e. if the purpose for which the service, in this case, is chosen is not fulfilled the consumer would face quality issues (Howard S. Gitlow, 2005). When the Presto Cleaners opened their doors to customers, Mr. and Mrs. Shelton chose this service mainly because of the convenient location, suitable working hours and most importantly the friendliness and helpful nature of the staff. However, the cost was higher than competitors located in the vicinity, the Sheltonââ¬â¢s gave Pre sto preference because they wanted to seek the quality services even if they had to pay higher costs for it.
